Eye Care Intervention

The Foundation started Eye Care/Blindness Prevention Programme in 2005, where free eye screenings, distribution of reading glasses and cataract surgeries were conducted for the general public.

Amen Health Care and Empowerment Foundation has been working to reduce the burden of preventable vision impairment and blindness in Nigeria. The Organisation has conducted so far over 30 eye care outreaches in 6 states (Edo, Lagos, Cross Rivers, Delta, Gombe and Osun) and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria.

On the 8th of January 2008, Professor Adenike Grange, then Minister for Health flagged off free cataract surgeries collaboration programme between Amen Foundation, Sightsavers and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin City, Edo State. That collaboration provided free cataract surgeries for 1,127 indigents from 2008 – 2012.

The collaboration with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital was instrumental in sustaining the residency programme for resident doctors, who hitherto were sent to Kaduna for hands-on. The programme therefore ensured that the Teaching Hospital retained the accreditation to continue training resident doctors and provide care for the indigent.

Free medical outreach was carried out by this Foundation at Ogbe Nursing Home, opposite Golf Course GRA, Benin City, Edo State, to provide Eye Care (distribution of glasses and medication) on 21 and 22 September 2022.
